Open the Bottom of the laptop where the hard disk is contained and see if it just needs to be reseated.

If it has been damaged and this data is as important to you as you say, dont fret.

All data can be recovered off the drive. Because its such important data that may be an option for you. This should be done by a professional only because of the level of importance pertaining to the data.

EEK!!

There's only 3 possible scenarios here:

1) The Hard drive disconnected itself from the port it's plugged into. FIX: Take the hard drive cover off and try to re-insert the drive.

2) You've pooched the drive, and everything you've been working on for months is gone. FIX: Get a new hard drive and start over.

3) The drive is just not powering up anymore. FIX: Spend several thousand dollars to have a company that does data recovery use their advanced hardware techniques to restore some or all of your data.

HOPEFULLY IT'S 1!

With the laptop off flip it over and look at the bottom.

There will be some panels held in by screws, you need the one for the hard drive. On each panel there may be symbols engraved. It may be a symbol with 3 disks like...

_
_
_

but close together.

Remove the screw from the panel and there should be a plastic tab, pull on it. Ok now pull on it harder until it pops out. Now put it back in and replace the screw and restart the computer.

I'm 80% confident that re-seating your hard drive will fix this.

I believe nothing is lost but you will need to find out a place where they can recover the data. Check for service center offering data recovery. I am pretty damn sure you wont lose anything. Get a usb hard disk with you or a couple of DVDs when you go to get the data recovery professional.

1) Reseat your harddrive, as stated above.
2) If that doesn't work, bring the harddisk to a data recovery professional. Most data can be recovered this way. Since it's only a short fall, this shouldn't be necessary.

Hi - bummer !

As mentioned above - try first to reseat hard drive.

(Also mentioned above) - getting an 'external laptop usb drive housing' is a worthwhile option. My friend had a toshiba laptop that completely died. I just popped the hardrive in a external usb housing, and it fired up. I would be a touch surprised if this didn't work. If they dont let you try one in a shop for free (to see if the hard drive powers up) then I paid $25.00 AUS for one. Hope it works out.
cheers.........
