How do I re-format or take windows XP off w/o the recovery disk?
My Toshiba Sattelitte was not running properly and the virus scan was causing the machine to shut down.
After searching the internet for the symptoms (specific programs were starting w/o my control), i found that it could be a worm or virus. I then downloaded some spyware/worm software and it said i had a "Lampsey trojan horse". It wouldn’t take it off w/o paying some fee. I then dowloaded spybot and it kept crashing at the same point at every scan.
Then it would take forever to restart after locking up. I couldn’t do anything after logging in b/c it would freeze up. It got worse until now it won’t even boot up XP home edition.
It gives me the safe mode and other options but after selecting it flashes to a blue screen for bout 1/2 second, the drive makes a noise then it takes back to the same select safe mode screen.
I have my key code for the XP edition but not the actual disk.
I figure I have lost all my data, pictures, files, music but how can I get it to work ag
You might not have lost your data yet. Take it to a service repair place like Geek Squad (like at Best Buy) or CompUSA or some computer repair place and have them transfer your data to a new disk, and make sure you tell them there’s a virus on it so they can scan it and clean it. If you don’t have the disk for Windows XP you can call Microsoft and they will send you a new one since you still have your key code.

Yes, you may not have lost any data..hook your drive to a working PC, scan the files you want to save, and if clean, drag them over to later restore…then use anyone elses XP disk, as long as its the same type (version) as yours ..(so your key will work), then install as usual, but use YOUR key…a disk will accept many different keys, as long as its the same version. Then you should be fine..
I suggest that, better; you adopt a system restore operation. It is safe and the problems can be rectified. You have to carefully select the date of restore. Ensure that the PC was functioning normally on the selected date for restoration. If you want to know an effective procedure for system restore please visit the following site.

After successful repairs
Delete all temp internet files including off line content, delete all temp files . Go to add/remove progras and delete all programs that are not required. (These can be done in many ways including disc clean up option) Then defrg the PC.
If you are successful then, select a standard antivirus and an anti spy ware and install in your PC so that the problem does not occur again. There are a number of antivirus and anti spyware in the market. Some are free some are to be purchased. Please visit the following site and select a suitable free antivirus.
