How to restore data after using Windows XP backup utility ?
I recently backed up data onto a external usb drive using the windows XP backup utility.
My 60 GB hard disk (with three partitions) crashed yesterday and is not recoverable. I bought a 250 GB hardisk and have reloaded windows XP. How do I restore the data/programs from my backup drive? I have made three partitions in my new drive. How will the restoration know where to put things, since my new hard disk is larger in capacity?
This is a suggestion to try, no guarantee.
Since you don’t need to recover to your original XP System using the saved Folder, I assume you only need to recover some of the contents from it. Let’s assume the Folder has an ID like: Backup27Feb07 or something like that. Install the USB drive containing the Folder above.
Start Command Prompt, i.e.,Start=>All Program=>Accessory=>Command Prompt.
In Command Prompt type NTBACKUP. Backup utility should run. If a warning coming about removable Storage, just click OK. A popup with Welcome to the backup … should appear. In the popup click Advanced Mode then Next. Hopefully, the Folder should appears in the window, if not click Browse and direct it to the USB drive. It must be able to recognise the Folder, if not, I won’t know what else to do. Assuming the Folder shows up then click on it, if accepted then click next. From there you should be able to expand by clicking on the USB drive ID then the sub folders within. Check the sub folders you are interested in. When you selected all the files you are interested, select to restore to a single folder. You can then redistribute the data from the specified single folder.
You can run the Backup/Restore utility again - only this time - check the restore button of the utility. It will walk you through the process of locating your backup files and the destination . It is pretty easy. The wizard will recognize the drives connected to your computer and you can direct the file to their proper location.
