Edit: Well, you want freeware, huh, but be careful though. Some of this freeware could damage your hard disk or damage your data even further as not all of them perform as they’ve claimed.

You’d do well to ask everyone how much experience they’ve had with the software they’ve suggested, then.

For commercialware: Spinrite is pretty good.

(Yep, I just tried this software which seems to work quite well. There was this archive about 300++ mb huge that I’d deleted a few hours ago. And it also recovered loads of files I’d deleted up to a few weeks ago! )

The only good software I know to do that (find file on broking hard disk) is Ontrack

http://www.ontrackdatarecovery.ca/odrn/

But the software cost 1000 $ and more

So go in a repair shop who have this software (Ask them)

And they will do it for you.

You can check "Recover My Files v3.84". Just download this version and I will provide you the serial number.

It recovers files etc.

I use this software for recovering.
