Hello - laptop problems (sigh). Please read my Problem Description and then go to My Questions at the end.

PROBLEM DESCRIPTION:

I tried to start my laptop this morning but I was faced with the Blue Screen of Death (with the following message):

A problem has been detected…follow these steps:

Disable or uninstall any anti-virus, disk defragmentation or backup utilities. Check your hard drive configuration and check for any updated drivers. Run CHKDSK /F to check for hard drive corruption, and then restart your computer.

MY QUESTIONS:
1) Is there anything I can do myself, with just my laptop? Once I am on the Blue Screen of Death, the laptop doesn’t allow me to input anything, but if I press F2 before the Blue Screen of Death appears, I get into something called teh ‘Setup Utility’. Is there anything I can do here?
2) If I decide not to (or cannot) do 1), and instead do a data recovery and reconfigure the hard drive, is there any way I can do a data recovery myself, using another laptop? How do I go about this? Are there any step-by-step instructions on the web?
3) Or should I just get the PC repair place to do a data recovery and a windows reinstall (they suggested if I wanted to save money I could do the latter myself). I just came from there, they want a lot of money. If anyone is in London (UK) and can suggest a cheap data recovery specialist, please let me know.

Ok there’s a lot of questions here, I hope someone can help me!

I didn’t buy one but I made a 3 part recovery disk set when I bought my laptop. I now have a virus and don’t know how to get rid of it. I know the disk will reset everything and I’ll lose all of my data but will the virus be gone?

I’ve been planning on repairing Windows Xp on my laptop but I’ve been hesitant because I have some very important files on there. I’m running on an Ubuntu disk right now and my files are still there. I have a full Windows XP pro disk and the option to repair. Now, if I do this will my files be deleted? Thanks.

My Toshiba Satellite A205-S5855 hard drive just took a dump. I tried doing system recovery using discs that came with laptop and an error came up…I called a toshiba tech and they told me I need new hard drive. In order for my system recovery to work, can i get any hard drive (for instance any from best buy) or must i get the same one i originally have in order for my software to work?

My external hard disk is almost full. However, I kept trying to store more data. Suddenly all the icons of my files in my external hard disk dissppeared. However, it showed that there is only 5MB left. But I can’t find any of my files. They are all missing. Then, I unplugged the external hard disk . Now my laptop can’t detect my external hard disk after I plugged the hard disk drive back into the laptop. My external hard disk has been making some " sizzling sound " and very hot .
However, my laptop can detect my friend’s external hard disk.

Question 1) As the title question
Question 2) I really wanna recover all my files. Should I take into the data recovery specialist? Or I reapair it my self ?
Question 3) I believe I haven’t dome anything wrong to my external hard disk. Why do I deserve this ? Can this be avoidable?

I ‘ve just bought my external hard disk for several months. It’s name is Maxtor OneTouch Mini4 ( 160GB)
Thanks

So laptop is dead because of motherboard. They say it’s unrepairable. If I wanna replace mobo, it’s going to be almost a price of new laptop.

Another option is date recovery. What does it actually mean? Does it mean I’d get all my data like documents and photos as Hard disk is not corrupted at all?

Are they gonna give me all those in one CD? I have no experience at all.
Is 50 pounds reasonable? Actually I’d lose 35 pounds for delivery already if I didn’t take any of their service. So it’s like 15 pounds for data recovery. Thank you for prompt reply.

Does any one know where I can get a recovery disk for my aced aspire or just a disk download to reinstall my softload… My laptop won’t boot up error bootmgr missing!! So I want to reinstall it clean. But i need to know were to download the data for free… :) thankyou

Will my external hard disk break down if I store too much data in it?

My laptop’s hard disk not responding & seems like crashed. Is there any way to recover data from it.

I used a USB 2.0 to IDE or SATA adapter from Cables to Go to connect the hard drive from my tower pc(running XP) to my new HP Pavilion 9000 laptop loaded with Vista. The hard drive that I connected was the hard drive loaded with the XP OS, and also had a "system restore/recovery" partition on it. It had special recovery software from Emachines (the manufacturer of the PC) I think.

Usually when the Emachines PC is booted, it first shows the main screen with the Emachines logo and also mentions "[F9] for Boot Options] and the like. Then there is a black screen that says "Press [F11] to start recovery __". The "__" is a countdown that always starts from 2 and then goes to 0. When it gets to 0 it always goes to a new screen where it informs you that it is loading Windows XP. I believe the countdown was to inform the user that after 2 seconds, it would be to late to press [F11] and therefore would have to restart the PC in order to perform the System Recovery. Anyway, it no longer behaves the way it should. Now, instead of continuing to the next screen after the count down ends, it posts a new line in the prompt bellow the first one with the same text as the previous line along with a new 2 sec. count down. It repeats the same thing over and over for eternity. I let it cycle through about 300 lines of crap and shut it down. After several more boots, it does the same thing, and the only response to me actually pressing [F11] is that the current line’s count down ends instantly, only to create a new line. Is this because I connected it to a Vista PC? The hard drive definitely works, but why can’t it be booted from? It’s detected by my old PC and it even loads to the "System Recovery" screen, so it must be connecting. Is there some way I can make the hard drive bootable again?

Also, I already tried using the same adapter with my tower PC and tried booting it that way, but it also freezes on the same screen.

Thanks for any help you can give me.

So I woke up 4 months ago (on 15/7, I still remember!) to find my USB Hard Disk empty. I took it to a technical and he couldn’t do anything but format the hard disk. Any Ideas? Because that data was really dear.
The technie guy used it on another computer, and I tried it on both the laptop and the desktop, so yeah, I did try it on more than one computer.

I was taking my data from my laptop and putted it on an external hard disk, I re-transferred it to a desktop computer but when I was about to have 92% completed, a power serge occurred during the process and I lost the data on the hard disk because its an external hard disk, is there a program to recover my files please tell me.
(The process was by using the cut and paste method).
So I need a recovery program that recovers all types of recovery even cut and pasted files.
To be more specific the largest file I need to recover is 300Mb and the files are in all formats (from document files - video files).
Thanks for your help in advance.

My laptop was acting up so I ran the system recovery disks and restored it to factory settings. One mistake though…there was a folder of pictures that I didn’t mean to delete. Any chance of getting those back using a data recovery program? What about sending the hard drive off?
Thanks

I need to know if this is an easy problem to fix or if there is a cheap way under 0(AU) to get the data back. It is an 80GB hard drive with less than 25GB of data. Would software recovery work? Or is it a mechanical problem?
It is a SATA hard drive out of a laptop. I have attempted to plug it in using an external hard drive casing but nothing was detected… please please help!!

What is the least expensive way to get this done?
Any last suggestions on how to resicitate it? When I turn it on it just gives me the spinning beach ball. And when I tried to connect it with a firewire to my laptop it said it could not read it…help.

Im fed up with my pc and im getting a new one, im paying alot to get it fixed every few weeks,, im throwing it away but theres one thing, i need certain files that were on my hard drive, how can retrieve them, i know theres thousands of hard drive recovery software around. Is there anyway i can remove the hard drive and link it up to my laptop. Any help would be appreciated

I am in trouble. I dropped my laptop on the floor and now it won’t start. I had my college notes in it which I had been working on for 8 months. I was a fool to not have a backup for all those files. now I am in real trouble. I had stayed up all night for months working on the notes and now I think I have lost it all. when I tried starting the laptop it said ‘insert hard disk’ . so the hard disk has moved from it’s place, that’s okay but do you think the hard disk has been damaged and I have lost everything that was in it ? do you think i can still recover my data ?

Im getting a new laptop in about 3 - 4 days (depending on how much longer the shipping takes). I backed up all my important files, music and data. have backup disks for all my programs. now all my saved websites on firefox, is there a way to save them or back them up simply?

I am recent grad looking for a job. That means I need the laptop badly and don’t have much money to fix it. The hard disk, started giving off some really loud noises in the morning and by afternoon, BIOS wasn’t even detecting it. I am not sure how long it would take to fix this and how much a new one would cost. Same about data recovery too. Any suggestions or advice on this would be greatly appreciated.
